‘Frozen month’ in Spain: frozen octopus

On February 15, a new edition of ‘Frozen Month’ began in Spain, an initiative launched more than ten years ago by AECOC through the Frozen Products Platform, which aims to vindicate the importance and added value of frozen products, something worthy of support and dissemination, given that 99% of Spanish households consume this type of products, which we ourselves prepare and distribute throughout the country, and also sell in our Mariscos Apolo stores.

This platform is integrated by some of the most important manufacturers with presence in Spain, and this ‘Frozen Month’ will be visible to the user through supermarkets and hypermarkets -for example, in Carrefour, where we are also present-. The initiative culminates with two prizes, one for the supermarket chain or shopping center that best presents its frozen food section and the other for the company that best conveys the values of the campaign.

In a virtual and parallel way, from this blog, we are going to participate highlighting our frozen octopus, which is an authentic delicatessen very typical of our gastronomic culture. Did you know that to prepare them at home, if we are not experts in octopus and we do not know how to ‘scare’ it, the best is to have the octopus frozen and thaw it before cooking it? Try this trick, it works.

Apolo’s frozen octopus

In our catalog we have many formats of frozen octopus, being a product in which we stand out for, among other reasons, having a professional cooker exclusively for it. In our case, it is octopus fished and brought from Morocco, which is considered one of the best in the world for its tender meat -without colorants or preservatives, of course-. On the one hand, there are the 500 gr., 1 kg. and 1.5 kg. trays. The smaller one is very useful for a dinner at home with friends. The other two are very practical for establishments and restaurants.

We also have the frozen octopus leg in slices, packed in 200 gr. cases. Ideal for a tapa, quick to defrost or for one person to eat. When preparing a seafood salpicón, or a refreshing pipirrana malagueña, the most advisable is a slice of octopus in 1 kg bag.

Or we can think of whole vacuum-packed legs. It takes up little space, you can cut it to taste and it is ideal to eat with the family. The octopus cooked in flower is perfectly prepared and packaged to get the most out of it in restaurants, hotels and large celebrations, where it will be consumed in large quantities and you have to look at the expense in more detail.

As with other mollusks and shellfish, octopus contains high levels of zinc, which as we saw in the previous post, participates in the development of the sexual organs and maintains our body’s defenses. It provides vitamin B and E, is recommended to counteract many diseases and to follow certain diets, since it has very low levels of saturated fats, has good levels of calcium and iron, helps control cholesterol…. A jewel! Only those who suffer from hypertension (because of the sodium) or stomach problems (it is more difficult to digest) should avoid consuming it.

If it is also frozen octopus, we will have the advantage of having a product of the highest quality and with a totally tender meat, something difficult to achieve with fresh octopus, as we said before. We encourage you to try it!
