Do you know all the fish that Mariscos Apolo has? Pollock, the fish we present you today, is confused in appearance with cod and in taste with hake. Today we will introduce you to it.
What is pollock?
Pollock is a white, gadid fish (from the Latin gadus, meaning “cod”). Gadids are fish similar to cod and have that characteristic elongated shape. It is a very healthy lean fish. Its consumption is highly recommended for people who wish to lose weight due to its low percentage of fat.
Northern fish
Pollock is appreciated all over the world but it lives in cold waters. For this reason, it is usually found in the north of the eastern coast of the Atlantic Ocean. A very typical area for its fishing is the Bay of Biscay, which is why it is so popular in France and Spain.
The recipes you make with cod and hake can also be tried with this fish. When cooking it, it is not necessary to remove the skin, as it is very thin and does not contain much fat. Some examples of recipes to prepare with this fish are:
- Cod au gratin
- Cod salad
- Cod with chickpeas
- Traditional fish soup: This last one is perhaps one of the most traditional ways of eating haddock.
The artist’s fish
As we have already mentioned, the scientific name of pollock is pollachius pollachius. This is why in English this fish is known as pollock. Hence, during the heyday of the abstract painter, Jackson Pollock, there was a certain humor between the name of the painter and the name of the fish.
