Today is a special day for all seafarers, fishermen and hoteliers who, in one way or another, live off the oceans. Every June 8, World Oceans Day is celebrated to try to give importance and raise awareness to take care of our environment.
In 2020, the United Nations Assembly has put the focus on innovation to achieve a sustainable ocean. We must maintain the health of the ocean as well as better manage the water resources of countries whose access to them is more limited. That is why, on this World Oceans Day, it is also important to raise awareness to care for marine resources and maintain an environment that is not only favorable to us, but absolutely necessary.
Although many perceive the oceans as 70% of the planet, practically desert, the reality is not that. Water is the source of life on our planet. And much of the oxygen we breathe comes from nowhere else but the hydrothermal vents. In them we have a great biodiversity with which our planet breathes healthy. We can also find great solutions in the deep sea or ocean depths.
The oceans against COVID-19
Recently, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic that is currently afflicting the world, humans have once again resorted to a marine bacterium that is used in the detection of the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Previously, this same bacterium had been used to detect AIDS or SARS, a disease related to COVID-19 that wreaked havoc in China a few years ago.
In addition, microbiologists are studying the possibilities that this bacterium may provide the answer we need in the search for a cure for this new disease. In a way, the ocean may once again offer us salvation.
