Fish and seafood from A to Z: Tilapia

Learn about tilapia, the fish of African origin produced in Asia and consumed mainly in America. We tell you the particularities of this low-cost fish with an increasingly appreciated meat.

Among our products you can also find tilapia fillet.

An all-terrain species

In this case it would not be all-terrain but all-aquatic, the species we are naming. Tilapia is extremely versatile. It is one of the few species that can live in both fresh and salt water, as well as in poorly oxygenated waters.

The most relevant characteristic in the water in which it breeds is the temperature, since it lives in warm waters. This is the reason why we find tilapia and other fish of the same family, the cichlids, in tropical waters.

Where tilapia is eaten

Although this fish is of African origin, its ease of living in high population concentrations and its versatility make it very suitable for fish farming. China is the world’s largest producer of tilapia and one of the largest consumers, along with the United States.

Throughout the Americas it is one of the most popular fish, however, it is in the United States where it is especially important, where it is the second most imported fish, behind only salmon.

Characteristics of the fish

Tilapia, due to its ease of farming and origin, has always been a low-priced fish. However, nowadays we have been able to appreciate the value of its white meat, which has practically no fat. This is why tilapia is nowadays a good and cheap fish.

In addition to its meat, high levels of collagen have been found in its scales, with which scientists are conducting studies on bone regeneration.
