Fish and seafood from A to Z: the Lobster

The lobster in nature

The lobster is a decadopod, that is to say, an animal with 10 legs like the Norway lobster, the lobster, the prawn or the shrimp. This characteristic is the main characteristic of its family and in fact in many languages the same word is used to define many of these animals. In some the word “shrimp” is favored to define them and in others the word “lobster”.

Between these two families that we could distinguish, the shrimp and the lobster, we could say that the main difference is the existence of claws. The lobster is identified by its large claws. However, not all of them have them, the spiny lobster, for example, lacks them.

It is an animal that has significant differences with other members of the same species. Three major lobster species are the European lobster, the Californian lobster and the Caribbean lobster.

The lobster as a symbol of the eternal

The lobster shows no visible signs of aging and loses no faculties over the years. It is also capable of regenerating its antennae, claws and legs. As if that were not enough, when it lives in the depths of the ocean, it can last more than 100 years of life. This is why a romanticism has been created around the decadopod, where it is seen as a symbol of what lasts forever.

For Christmas

Seafood is a very typical dish for Christmas time and thanks to frozen seafood it is more accessible. There are many ways to cook it by then. Cooked, grilled, au gratin, baked, etc. Even in Catalonia it is customary to have it with chocolate. In fact, it is not nonsense. It is a matter of fusing the goodies of the sea with those of the land.
